Directions to San Giminiano
San Gimignano is an Italian town of 7 518 inhabitants in the province of Siena in Tuscany. It is famous for the characteristic medieval architecture of its historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
San Gimignano is located on a hill in the Val d’Elsa, halfway between Florence and Siena. Its name derives from San Geminiano, bishop of Modena who, according to tradition, saved the city from the barbarian invasions. San Gimignano was an important commercial and cultural center in the Middle Ages, thanks to its position along the Via Francigena.
The city reached its maximum splendor between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, when noble families built the famous towers that still dominate the landscape. San Gimignano still retains its medieval appearance, with its walls, its gates, its squares, its churches and its palaces.
Among the most important monuments there are the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo Comunale, the Civic Museum, the Torre Grossa, the Duomo and the Museum of Sacred Art. San Gimignano is also known for its typical products, such as saffron, pecorino cheese and Vernaccia wine.
